How do I start with triathlon? Tips and Tricks from our triathlete Martijn Dekker
In Belgium, triathlon is becoming hugely popular. The sport is growing tremendously. Most people start the sport without really knowing in advance how and what. What is important to know before you start triathlon? We asked our own Itzu Tri Team athlete, Martijn Dekker.
What is triathlon?
Triathlon is a combination of 3 sports, swimming, cycling and running. These disciplines can be performed in different distances. The most common distances are:
- Sprint / 1/8 500M swim - 20KM bike - 5KM run
- Quarter 1000M swim - 40KM bike - 10KM run
- Half 1.9KM swim - 90KM bike - 21KM run
- Full (Ironman) 3.8KM swim - 180KM bike - 42KM run
In addition to these distances, more distances are organized by different organizations. The advice of Martijn Dekker is: Start with a sprint distance and see if you like this before you start the longer work.
What do I need?
Since the triathlon sport consists of 3 disciplines, you also need a lot of material to start. Obviously the more experience you have, the more extensive the material range will be. But we start with the basics.
- Swim cap
- Swimming board
- Bike. A normal road bike is more than enough
- Cycling shoes
- Bike clothes
- Running shoes. Get good advice at a running specialty store.
- Run clothes
The right guidance!
Most beginning athletes start without any guidance / coaching. This makes the traditional beginner's mistake that they train too hard / fast and too much at once. As a result, they get injured and get hooked off before they have done their first triathlon. Therefore, make sure that you are looking for a good coach who can properly assess the balance between training and rest and draw up a training plan with the right set-up.
Now that you have gone through the above points, you are ready to start. Make sure you like it and that you have the right dose of discipline and perseverance.
